Joined Apr 2, Messages 1, Durban - Four Thai women who had been in police custody since May for allegedly running an upmarket brothel in Ballito have had charges against them dropped after a court was told that the Department of Justice could not afford to pay for an interpreter.

A spokesman for the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mthunzi Mhaga, denied budgetary constraints prevented the hiring of the Thai interpreter, and blamed the magistrate for telling the area court manager that the case was going to be withdrawn.
Fourthly the prosecutor hits back. According to the charge sheet, the first request for an interpreter was made to the department on May 20 , when the accused first appeared in court. The charge sheet further indicates that four more requests were made to the department, in May, June and twice in July.
Fifthly the Department refuses to be outdone. Forget it was only seven weeks later. Forget that the accused are in custody. Small matter for busy officials of the Department. Now the fun really starts: According to a police source, the accused were arrested after a two-month undercover operation by the crime intelligence unit. The source said agents had gained access into the brothel on the pretext of being clients. The agents paid up to R1 an hour to hire these women.
